Homemade Croutons

Croutons are super easy to make and you can experiment with what spices you like on them.  The ones pictured below are made with my Country White Sourdough bread but you can use any type of bread you have on hand.

Recipe:

8 C bread cubes
2-4 Tbs bacon fat, butter or olive oil
Salt & pepper (optional)
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
2 cloves garlic (pressed or chopped) or 1/2 tsp garlic powder
Chopped fresh or dried parsley or any spice you prefer

Preheat oven to 400°F. Cut bread into whatever size cubes you want and place in bowl. Saute garlic with oil in pan (if using powder there's no need to saute) and drizzle on bread. Add rest of ingredients and mix well. Spread onto sheet pan, bake 10 minutes and then stir. Turn off oven but leave croutons in oven until hardened, about 30 minutes.

Optional spice combo:
1/2 tsp each salt, garlic powder, ground celery, thyme, dill, oregano, marjoram, basil, and a sprinkle of black pepper.
